چکیده

Matching methods for causal inference selectively prune observations from the data in order to reduce model dependence. They are successful when simultaneously maximizing balance (between the treated and control groups on the pre-treatment covariates) and the number of observations remaining in the data set. However, existing matching methods either fix the matched sample size ex ante and attempt to reduce imbalance as a result of the procedure (e.g., propensity score andMahalanobis distance matching) or fix imbalance ex ante and attempt to lose as few observations as possible ex post (e.g., coarsened exact matching and calpier-based approaches). As an alternative, we offer a simple graphical approach that addresses both criteria simultaneously and lets the user choose a matching solution from the imbalancesample size frontier. In the process of applying our approach, we also discover that propensity score matching (PSM) often approximates random matching, both in real applications and in data simulated by the processes that fit PSM theory. Moreover, contrary to conventional wisdom, random matching is not benign: it (and thus often PSM) can degrade inferences relative to not matching at all. Other methods we study do not have these or other problems we describe. However, with our easy-to-use graphical approach, users can focus on choosing a matching solution for a particular application rather than whatever method happened to be used to generate it.

Causal Methods for Observational Data

Comparative effectiveness research often uses non-experimental observational data (like hospital discharge records or nationally representative surveys) to draw causal inference about the effectiveness of interventions for health. These ex post inferences require the careful use of specialized statistical methods in order to account for issues like selection bias and unmeasured heterogeneity. T...

Good Research Practices for Comparative Effectiveness Research:Analytic Methods to Improve Causal Inference from Nonrandomized Studies of Treatment Effects Using Secondary Data Sources: The ISPOR Good Research Practices for Retrospective Database Analysis Task Force Report—Part IIIvhe_602

Objectives: Most contemporary epidemiologic studies require complex analytical methods to adjust for bias and confounding. New methods are constantly being developed, and older more established methods are yet appropriate. Careful application of statistical analysis techniques can improve causal inference of comparative treatment effects from nonrandomized studies using secondary databases. A T...

Multilevel Propensity Score Methods for Estimating Causal Effects: A Latent Class Modeling Strategy

Despite their appeal, randomized experiments cannot always be conducted, for example, due to ethical or practical reasons. In order to remove selection bias and draw causal inferences from observational data, propensity score matching techniques have gained increased popularity during the past three decades. Although propensity score methods have been studied extensively for single-level data, ...

The Statistics of Causal Inference: The View from Political Methodology

Many areas of political science focus on causal questions. Evidence from statistical analyses are often used to make the case for causal relationships. While statistical evidence can help establish causal relationships, it can also provide strong evidence of causality where none exists. In this essay, I provide an overview of the statistics of causal inference. Instead of focusing on statistica...
